Sri Lanka President runs away, as citizens, soldiers invade his house over poverty

President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa has run away from his official residence.

On Saturday, thousands of protesters invaded the president’s residence, demanding his resignation.

Rajapaksa was hastily moved to the Army headquarters some hours before the invasion.

The country’s military operatives have joined the protesters who broke police barricades and entered.

Dozens, including two police officers, sustained various degrees of injuries, and have been hospitalized, as confirmed by the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL).

The Informant247 observes that the citizens of the country have been complaining about poverty, unbearable cost of living and ceaseless economic crisis.

Reports have it that the people are not employed; are not able to pay rent; food prices are high; medicines are not available; petroleum products are scanty.

In viral videos and pictures, some protesters could be seen, breaking in the president’s house.

Some others could be seen cooking food in the kitchen and others moved round the presidential residence.

The South Asian nation, with a population of 22 million, have faced its worst economic crisis in decades.

Nothing less than 16 members of parliament from Rajapaksa’s party Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna have told him to tender his resignation.
