“Shut up” comment: Senator Nwaebonyi plans to report Ezekwesili to Igbo traditional leaders
Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, has declared his intention to report former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, to Igbo traditional leaders following her recent comments directed at him. Nwaebonyi labeled her remarks as disrespectful and an unprecedented attack on his character.
In a heated discussion on Kakaaki, a breakfast program aired on AIT, Nwaebonyi expressed his outrage over Ezekwesili allegedly telling him to “shut up” and branding him a “hooligan.” He stated that such disrespect extends beyond himself, impacting the revered institution of Igbo red-cap chiefs.
“I am going to take her up within the Igbo traditional leadership because it has never happened,” Nwaebonyi asserted. He emphasized his commitment to respect women, stating, “I can’t talk to my wife like that in public. I can’t talk to my driver like that in public. I can’t talk to any woman like that.”
Highlighting his advocacy for women’s rights, Nwaebonyi pointed out his legal efforts to secure property rights for women in traditional cases and his philanthropic initiatives, which include building homes for widows and sponsoring the education of over 300 children.
“This is unacceptable,” he said regarding Ezekwesili’s comments. Nwaebonyi also questioned her political credentials, contrasting his election to the Senate, where he received the support of over 500,000 voters, with her lack of electoral success, including not having won a ward-level election.
The senator’s vow to escalate the matter to Igbo traditional leaders indicates that the controversy surrounding this exchange is far from over, as tensions persist between the two public figures.
