24 hours after Jumia’s food delivery service announced its exit in Nigeria by the end of 2023, the Shoprite Mall on Friday announced that it will close its Kano State branch on January 14, 2024, saying its decision was based on budgetary limitations and the significant expenses associated with conducting business in the country.
According to the circular released, the company apologised for the change, saying it was a necessary but unfortunate decision.
It further stated that upon closing the mall’s operations in the state, all of the current staff would be let go.
“I regret to inform you that, as of January 14, 2024, our store in the Ado Bayero Mall in Kano will be closing. We considered the potential effects this choice may have on our workers and the community before making it.
“However, after careful consideration of the store’s financial situation and the current business climate, we believe it is the best course of action for our organisation’s long-term growth.”
Meanwhile, the store also announced its intentions to open more locations nationwide, adding that the Kano employees can apply for jobs in these new locations.
“We recognise that it could be challenging to process this news. We want to reassure you that we are here to support you during this time of change and that your welfare is our first concern. We will also use every resource at our disposal to help you locate new opportunities inside our organisation, and we encourage you to apply for any vacant position in our existing stores across the country through the Human Resources department,” the statement added.
