Tony Ugwu, Chairman of the Enugu State Football Association (ESFA), has congratulated Senegal’s Teranga Lions on winning the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ugwu made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Nsukka, adding it was joyful that Senegal had finally broken the AFCON curse.
Senegal defeated Egypt’s Pharaohs 4-2 on penalties after a scoreless normal and extra time at Cameroon’s Olembe Stadium.
“With this triumph, Senegal has joined the ranks of countries that have raised the trophy,” Ugwu remarked.
He stated that, although losing on penalties, Egypt gave a decent account of themselves in the encounter.Penalty kicks in football are unpredictable since even the finest player might miss one at any time.
“Both sides gave their all, but the God of Soccer was on Senegal’s side,” he stated.
The ESFA president also praised the Confederation of African Football for the tournament’s success.
According to him, the tournament’s outcome “displayed a high degree of effective preparation, coordination, and execution.”
“I also salute the countries that took part in the competition for their sportsmanship and patriotism,” he added.
