The Minister for Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare has revealed that a revised allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members was before President Muhammadu Buhari for necessary approval.
Dare made this revelation at the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of NYSC in Abuja
He said the national youth scheme was aiming at multiplying the skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme for NYSC members throughout their year of service.
He added that the committee was to recommend on reforms; how to improve the welfare of the concerned and to improve the running of the scheme.
He said: “The allowances of our youth corps members have been increased from N19,000 to N33,000; that is even above the minimum wage. And that is part of their welfare.
“As we speak, the NYSC under the DG and the management staff has sent forth a proposal to improve on their uniform, to increase their different allowances and that is already with the president.
“If that gets the approval that is necessary; even SAED training will go beyond just three weeks and would be through the entire youth service. So those are the areas that are covered.”
