Ramadan: Kano censorship board suspends DJs, shuts gala houses statewide

The Kano State Censorship Board has ordered the closure of entertainment centres popularly known as “Gala houses” and suspended all DJ activities across Kano State as Muslims commence the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, speaking on behalf of the Chairman, Abba El-Mustapha, said the directive takes effect from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

The Board explained that the measure is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and spiritually conducive atmosphere for worship throughout the Ramadan period.

It added that the date for reopening, particularly for Eid celebrations, would be announced at the appropriate time.

The agency urged all affected operators and stakeholders to comply strictly with the directive, noting that the action is in line with the law establishing the Board and its mandate to regulate entertainment activities within the state.

The statement also prayed for Allah to grant residents good health and tranquility as they observe their religious duties, and to bless the state with mercy and prosperity during the holy month.
