Rainstorm wreaks havocs in Niger, Taraba, destroys buildings

Rainstorm has wreaked havoc in Kutu town, headquarters of Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, destroying houses, public property, schools and left several persons injured in its wake.

The Informant247 gathered that tragedy struck at the weekend in Taraba State, as rainstorm destroyed the buildings of the College of Agriculture in Ardo-Kola Local Government Council of the state.

In Niger State, other towns said to be affected by the heavy wind that occurred Friday night in the local government include Gwada, Zumba, Erena, among other areas.

The affected public property include the Shiroro Local Government Education Authority Veterinary Hospital and General Hospital in town of Niger State.

While confirming the incident, Salis M Sabo, spokesperson

Coalition of Shiroro Associations (COSA) told our correspondent that the windstorm blew off the roofs of 198 houses, 104 shops, four schools, public buildings and left about 11 persons injured.

According to him,”In the history of the town, there has never been such a disastrous windstorm, which lasted for almost two hours.

It also explained that assessment of other adjoining towns such as Gwada, Zumba, Erena and other villages is ongoing in the council.

The coalition then called on the state government through Niger State Emergency Management Agency, office of the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and other relevant agencies to, as, matter of urgency come to the rescue of the affected people.

In a related development, the downpour in Taraba State, which lasted for about an hour, was observed to have destroyed structures and facilities at the college.

Facilities noticed to have been affected by the rainstorm include the staff quarters and some lecture theaters belonging to the engineering department.

The College Provost, Yakubu Garjilla, confirmed that the rainstorm has negatively affected the college, urging the government to as a matter of urgency come to their aid.
