President Tinubu honours Ogoni martyrs, pledges support for peace and justice

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and unity among Nigeria’s diverse communities in a message marking the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day.

Standing with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People (NYCOP) and the wider Ogoni community, the President – according to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga said – honoured those who sacrificed their lives in defence of Ogoni interests.

This year’s remembrance, themed “After Price, Comes Prise,” serves as a reminder of the resilience of the Ogoni people and reflects Nigeria’s collective commitment to learning from the past and building a more hopeful future.

“We honour their memory by recognising the sacrifices made and pledging to strive for a future characterised by peace, justice, and sustainable development for all communities, particularly those in the Niger Delta,” President Tinubu stated.

The President assured that his administration is dedicated to addressing historical grievances and working towards a prosperous and united Nigeria. He emphasised that constructive engagement and mutual respect will be key to achieving this vision for future generations.

Oil exploration in Ogoniland dates back to 1958 with the first commercial discovery at Oloibiri. Over the years, Ogoni leaders fought against environmental degradation caused by oil activities, a struggle that led to the tragic 1995 execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists.

“As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honour their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” President Tinubu concluded.

This message reflects Tinubu’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development and justice, particularly in the Niger Delta, and reinforces his administration’s efforts to build a nation that recognises the sacrifices of all its people.
