Poor nutrition can lead to diseases, Kwara govt advices residents

The Kwara State Government has advised residents of the state to prioritize nutrition for a healthier future, stressing that poor nutrition can lead to diseases and hinder intellectual development.

The advice was contained in a statement released on Friday by the Information Officer, Kwara State Ministry of Communication Basheer Lawal.

According to the statement, the Kwara State Project Manager, Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria (ANRiN), Dr. Habeeb Lawal gave the advice while discussing the critical impact of malnutrition on mental health and cognitive function “Adequate Nutrition & Healthy Living”, organised by Ministry of Communications.

Speaking on the hazards of malnutrition, Dr. Lawal highlighted how it not only stunts physical growth but also hampers cognitive development, especially in young children.

“Obesity and stunting have serious consequences for mental health,” he explained.

The Project Manager described the first 1,000 days of a child’s life as the most critical period, during which adequate nutrition plays a pivotal role in shaping the child’s future health and intelligence.

He outlined key elements of an adequate diet, listing nutrient-rich foods such as milk, eggs, oranges, vegetables and addressed the significance of folic acid and Nutritional Management Support (NMS) for pregnant women, which help to protect both the mother’s and child’s health.

He added that exclusive breastfeeding is crucial in a child’s first six months, providing optimal nutrition and protection against diseases.
