Kwara State House of Assembly has called for tough punishments against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages by the people of the state.
This was one of the resolutions to be upheld on a matter of general public significance moved by Adetiba Olarewaju Raphael (Oke-Ero) constituency.
The House implored Governor of the state, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to order the State Ministry of Environment to play its roles and responsibilities in apprehending and prosecuting members of the state found guilty of the act in line with extant environmental laws.
The House also implored the number one citizen of the state to order the Ministry of Environment to embark on continuous sensitisation and education of the citizens of the state on the evils of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage system and foster sanity.
The parliament has also implored the government to provide necessary tools to officials of environmental ministry to make their works much productive in the society.
While presenting the motion, Hon. Adetiba-Olanrewaju, identified that out has become habit for people to dump refuse indiscriminately in the drainages whenever it rained.
He expressed dissatisfaction over the dumping of refuse in the drainage system as it had been one of the major causes of perennial flooding in various locations, death of many people, and loss of valuable property worth millions of Naira.
