Police drag man to court over alleged armed robbery, rape in Benue

The Benue State Police Command on Monday dragged one Friday Agbidi before a Court over alleged rape, criminal trespass, illegal possession of firearms and armed robbery.

Agbidi was arraigned before a Chief Magistrates’ Court 5, over alleged rape, criminal trespass, illegal possession of firearms and armed robbery.

Insp. Regina Ishaya, the police prosecutor informed the court that the matter was moved from the Divisional Police Headquarters Ugbokolo, to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Makurdi.

The prosecutor said the transfer of case was done via letter No. AR:3100/BNS/UG/VOL.5/84 dated Nov. 10.

He explained that the matter was brought to the awareness of the law enforcement agency at the Ugbokolo Police Station by Grace Onoja who’s living at Effoyo,  OKpokwu Local Government Area, on November 2.

She added that the accused (Friday Agbidi) invaded the house of the complainant’s boyfriend at Okungaga, Ugbokolo when she was sleeping, and dispossessed her of the sum of N265, 000 which belonged to her boyfriend.

Ishaya revealed that during the investigation of the police, Friday was apprehended and one local pistol was recovered from him.

She added that the crime committed by Friday was in contravention of the provisions of Sections 349, 284 Penal Code Law of Benue State, 2004 and Section 2(a)(b) and 3 (1) of the Robbery and Fire Arms Special Provision Act, 2004.

Ishaha also said police investigation into the case was still ongoing and demanded for time to conclude it.

However, the plea of the accused was rejected for want of jurisdiction.

Mrs Erdoo Ter, the Magistrate, has ordered the remand of the suspect at the Federal Maximum Correctional facility in Makurdi.

Ter has adjourned the matter until December 16 for further mention.
