The Nigerian Police Force NPF has confirmed the arrest of police officers who were caught on video assaulting a motorist in Rivers State.
The NPF said the policemen would be taken to the force headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital today Tuesday April 11 where they would face disciplinary action.
This was revealed in a tweet by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi who described the actions of the officers’ as barbaric.
He disclosed that the police officers were three in number and connected to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Rivers State Police Command.
“These men have been arrested, and their commander will personally bring (them) to the Force Headquarters tomorrow, Tuesday for further actions. They are 3 in number, attached to RRS, Rivers State. Their action does not portray the police in a good light at all.
“You will see the evidence tomorrow. They will be at the Force headquarters and our actions will be made public…There is no place in our law, or act or training manual or curriculum where slapping or flogging is listed as a measure of arrest or applying minimum force as stipulated by law.”
The informant247 recalls that one of the armed police officers could be seen in the video which has gone viral online, slapping and flogging the motorist as he controlled the victim to enter a car parked by the roadside.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Okon Effiong, had directed the security agency to institute the arrest of the officers, and vowed to ensure they’re punished.
