Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, has drawn attention to the long-standing challenges faced by the Niger-Delta region and Bayelsa State.
Speaking at a town hall meeting of Labour Party stakeholders in Yenagoa, Obi expressed his concerns about the region’s underdevelopment and poverty levels, despite its significant oil resources.
Obi emphasized that it is disheartening to see a region where oil was first discovered still grappling with underdevelopment and pervasive poverty after 67 years.
He remarked that Bayelsa, in particular, should not be on the list of impoverished states given its abundant natural resources. According to Obi, this situation is primarily the result of poor leadership, which he aims to address.
He stated, “We want a new Bayelsa where those in leadership positions understand that they are there to serve the people and use public funds for the common good. This is the only way to lift people out of poverty. We cannot achieve this goal if funds are being mismanaged and embezzled.”
Obi also highlighted the importance of youth empowerment, job creation, and supporting small businesses as crucial steps toward improving the state’s economic prospects.
He urged the people to verify campaign promises and scrutinize candidates’ claims to make informed decisions about their future.
The Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Engr. Udengs Eradiri, outlined the party’s manifesto, called the “PEAP Agenda,” as a solution to the challenges facing the state.
He stressed the importance of self-reliance and emphasized the need for locally-driven solutions to the state’s problems.
Eradiri pledged to focus on capacity building, access to clean water, and healthcare improvement, aiming to reduce medical tourism and bolster the state’s healthcare system.
The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Barr. Julius Abure, urged Bayelsans to support candidates who prioritize their well-being and interests.
He called for voters to turn out in large numbers during the election and cast their ballots for leaders committed to responsible governance and the welfare of the people.
