Ayuba Wabba, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has told the Federal Government to begin the payment of hazard allowance to health workers.
Wabba made this revelation at the 2022 FCT Nurses Week/Scientific Workshop of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) which took place in Abuja, the nation’s capital on Thursday.
The leader of the Labour union said that many health workers have become victims of diseases as a result of their nearness to sick patients.
The president commended nurses and midwives, stating that their reward should be on earth and not only in heaven.
The President was confident that the morale of the health workers would be boosted if hazard allowance is paid.
The President of the NLC gave special regard to those who lost their lives as the country struggled to conquer the COVID-19 pandemic.
He further said that nurses and midwives were “the smile of life” who are held in high esteem by Nigerians.
”They also occupy a very special place in the health system of every country. There will be no future in health sector without the nurses.
“You are the soul of the health system, it takes a motherly heart and compassion to be a nurse. This is the kind of heart that must define our health sector,” he said.
