Parents behind high rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria’s Sokoto state: Official
SOKOTO, Nigeria (The Informant247) – The disturbing statistical rate of out-of-school children in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state is a result of parental lukewarm attitude to education of their wards, state officials said on Thursday.
“They need to be encouraged to acquire basic formal education. Government is always ready to support learning and teaching with the necessary facilities,” the state’s Universal Basic Education Board boss Altine Shehu Kajiji told reporters in Sokoto.
He said no society can fully develop without education, hence the need for children to acquire basic education to become useful to themselves and society.
“This is not to say we have achieved our mandate target. Parents have to support the project by keeping eyes on their wards to ensure we realised our dream,” he said.
Earlier this year, the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) disclosed that 10.5 million children are out of school in Nigeria, which is the highest rate in the world.
