The Federal Government has officially launched a nine-member independent investigative panel tasked with looking into the tragic death of Greatness Olorunfemi.
On September 26, Olorunfemi was reportedly stabbed and thrown from a moving vehicle along the Maitama-Kubwa highway.
A viral video alleged that the medical team at Maitama District Hospital in Abuja had demanded a police report and denied her medical treatment, with her passing away 20 minutes later.
The panel comprises representatives from prominent medical associations, including the Nigerian Medical Association, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, Medical Women Association of Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Association of Resident Doctors, Association of Pathologists of Nigeria, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, General Counsel of FCTA, and the Health Services Department, which serves as the Secretariat.
During the panel’s inauguration, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Health Services and Environment, emphasized that these experts were selected for their experience and would conduct a meticulous investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding Olorunfemi’s death and suggest solutions.
Fasawe highlighted the importance of transparency, accountability, and impartiality in the investigative process, stressing that the panel must adhere to clear guidelines and legal frameworks.
She urged them to view this mission as a vital service to the nation, promoting justice and patient safety.
The panel’s responsibilities include determining Olorunfemi’s clinical status upon arrival and until her demise, identifying the roles of all parties involved, and making recommendations to prevent similar incidents.
They have been given one week to complete their investigation.
Prof. Aminu Mohammed, President of MDCAN and chairman of the panel, expressed the group’s commitment to restoring confidence in how healthcare matters are handled.
He assured fairness to all parties, transparency in evidence-based decision-making, and recommendations for improving the healthcare system.
He added that the panel’s findings could set a precedent for how public services are rendered to Nigerian citizens, potentially leading to significant improvements in various sectors.
