More than 5,742 athletes from the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory will compete for medals in 35 different sports at this year edition of the National Youth Games.
The game which is now in its 7th edition was declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Asaba, Delta State.
The President who was represented by the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh said that the Games should promote the spirit of friendship amongst all states.
He urged all state officials and athletes to compete with the spirit of fairness and togetherness, while putting the interests of the nation first.
The Games will take place between September 23rd – 30th, 2023 across multiple venues in the Delta state capital.
Delta States has won all the editions of the youth games. The state won a total number of the 114 medals at the last edition which was held at the University of Ilorin.
About the National Youth Games
The National Youth Games Sports event in Nigeria is a brain child of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
It is a multi-sporting event organized by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the National Sports Commission or Ministry of Sports for athletes from the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.
The maiden edition of the National Youth Games held in 2013 at the main bowl of the National Stadium Abuja and the event was opened by the Vice President Namadi Sambo who was represented by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, Chairman National Sports Commission.
The last five editions was held at the University of Ilorin.
