Our investment in education yielding positive results: Lagos govt

The Lagos State Government says it is currently building iconic school structures with modern facilities in a bid to provide conducive learning environment for pupils and students in the state.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, said this in a statement signed by Mr Ganiu Lawal, the ministry’s Assistant Director of Public Affairs in Lagos on Thursday.

Adefisayo made the remark at the inauguration and handover ceremony of a newly renovated block of four Classrooms, Library and Borehole at Lafiaji Senior High School, Lagos Island, donated by the Rotary Club of Lagos.

“The iconic structures will be built out of containers, with state-of-the-art facilities like smart white board, tablets, and it will be a green school in that it will be powered by solar energy,” she said.

While commending the laudable project by the Rotary Club of Lagos, the commissioner stated that such investments were already yielding positive results, as recorded by performances of the students in national examinations.

“I am glad to announce that our student’s performance in WAEC last year, 2021, was 79 per cent pass, which beats the previous year performance of 39 per cent pass including Mathematics and English,” she said.

Adefisayo restated that the state government would continue to improve on teaching and learning to further empower the children to go out and make a difference in the world.

She added that the state government was committed to providing more projects in the education sector in 2022, disclosing that presently, about 1400 school infrastructure projects are ongoing across the state.

Adefisayo explained that one of such iconic projects is the ongoing construction at Vetland College, Agege, Lagos and said that the idea was to provide relevant skills for students to enable them get involve in new things.

She, however, called on stakeholders, NGOs and well-meaning individuals to support the government in providing infrastructure in schools as it cannot do it alone.

The commissioner also emphasised on various commitment of the present administration in the education sector, noting that 21st century requires a different set of skills for students.

“It is for this reason that the state government has continued massive investments in technology in order to meet the 21st century education needs in terms of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM),” Adefisayo added.
