Orire attack: abducted pupils, teachers rescued after 57 days in captivity
The pupils and teachers who were abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued, bringing an end to a tense search operation that followed the incident.
The rescue was confirmed on Friday by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President, Bayo Onanuga on his X handle, although authorities have yet to provide details on how the operation was carried out or the condition of those rescued. More information is expected from security agencies.
According to him, in the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are in DSS custody, while some were neutralised.
He also noted that the kingpin the kidnappers demanded his release, is currently prosecuted for his atrocities.
The victims were kidnapped earlier on May 15, 2025 when suspected gunmen attacked a group of pupils and teachers in Oriire LGA, sparking widespread concern among parents, residents and education stakeholders.
Following the abduction, security agencies launched a coordinated operation to track down the kidnappers and secure the victims’ release. The incident also renewed concerns over the growing threat of insecurity targeting schools and commuters in parts of the country.
Authorities are expected to brief the public on the circumstances surrounding the rescue, including whether any suspects were arrested or if casualties were recorded during the operation.
More details are expected.
