All is now set for the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria to host the 15th edition of the West African Universities Games, WAUG beginning from tommorow, Saturday, December 16 at the University.
The Game which will climax on December 22 , is expected to host about 200 Universities across the 16 West African countries.
Earlier in November, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Simeon Bamire alongside the President of West African Universities Sports Federation, Ibrahim Tanko had unveiled the mascot for the game.
At the mascot unveiling event, the VC said some Universities have registered to participate in the game which was last held in 2018.
WAUG is a multi-sport event for student-athletes from all over West Africa. The competition was first held in 1965 in Ibadan, Nigeria, and the last edition was held at the University of Portharcourt.
Expectedly, a variety of sports, including athletics, basketball, football, swimming, tennis, and volleyball will be featured in this year’s event.
According to Osun Defender, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), Abiodun Olanrewaju, had said that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, would be the special guest of honour during the opening and closing ceremonies of the games.
Formerly University of Ile-Ife and now OAU, the institution hosted the sixth edition of the competition in 1975 and is now reputed to be the only University in Nigeria to have hosted it twice.
Top management Members of the University are expected to grace the colourful opening ceremony on Saturday.
