NYSC extends service period for 3 corps members in Sokoto

Three members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) are to repeat their service year, while the service periods of three others have been extended due to cases of abscondment and misconduct.

This disclosure was made during the passing-out parade of the 2022 Batch ‘C’ Stream 1 corps members, held at the Wamakko permanent orientation camp on Thursday.

NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Usman Yakubu-Yaro, underscored the NYSC’s commitment to maintaining high standards. He stated, “NYSC is a scheme of reward and punishment,” emphasizing the organization’s zero-tolerance policy toward truancy and misconduct among corps members.

Among the 527 corps members who completed their service, one male and one female have been shortlisted for the prestigious ‘Sultan of Sokoto Meritorious Award.’

Yakubu-Yaro further mentioned that the NYSC deployed a substantial number of corps members to schools to teach, and medical personnel to rural areas where their services were most needed.

He called upon outgoing corps members to represent the scheme admirably wherever they go, encouraging them to leverage the skills acquired during their service year.

He also acknowledged the challenges of finding white-collar jobs in the current employment landscape.

The coordinator cautioned corps members against undertaking night journeys, which could pose serious dangers.

In the event that nightfall approaches during their travels, he advised them to seek shelter at a military barracks or the nearest police station before proceeding to their respective destinations.

Yakubu-Yaro expressed gratitude to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State for consistently sustaining the corps members’ monthly allowances, which have greatly assisted them.

He also extended his thanks to the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, for his benevolence, which includes the ongoing tradition of recognizing and awarding the two best corps members from every batch.
