NYSC condemns increasing corps members’ rejections by employers

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has sounded the alarm regarding the rising trend of employers rejecting corps members assigned to them.

Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, the NYSC Director-General, expressed deep concern over this issue, during the 2025 Annual Corps Employers’ Workshop in Jos, Plateau State.

Represented by Deputy Director Gbamisola Salami, Nafiu highlighted that such rejections deny corps members crucial work experience.

“Your organisations provide platforms for corps members to apply their skills and gain practical experience. Rejections hinder this objective,” he stated.

He further identified several contributing factors, including late or non-application processes for corps members, inadequate welfare provisions, and unkind treatment from some employers.

He, however, called on organizations to cultivate supportive work environments that enhance the well-being and productivity of corps members.

Plateau NYSC Coordinator Jonathan Yavala emphasized the workshop’s goal of fostering collaboration and closing communication gaps between employers and the NYSC.

“You are not just supervisors but mentors and partners in nation-building,” he remarked.

Earlier, in his remarks, the state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Musa Ashoms, underlined the importance of creating an enabling environment where corps members can thrive and make meaningful contributions to their host communities.
