Senate President Godswill Akpabio has found himself at the center of a debate following his recent statement about funds being allocated to senators to facilitate their holiday plans.
The news spread rapidly on social media, triggering a wave of criticism from Nigerians.
In a video that quickly went viral, Akpabio acknowledged the National Assembly Clerk’s distribution of funds to senators to aid in their holiday experiences.
He mentioned, “To ensure an enjoyable break, the clerk of the national assembly has forwarded a token to our respective accounts.”
Shortly after making this revelation and after consultation with fellow senators, Akpabio retracted his initial statement, modifying it to claim that prayers had been dispatched to senators’ email inboxes instead.
“I retract my earlier statement. The Senate President has sent prayers to your email inboxes to ensure a safe journey and return during your holiday.”
This series of events has ignited a firestorm on Nigerian social media, with citizens expressing their disappointment in Senator Akpabio and the nation’s leadership.
Michael Adaku’s tweet reflected a sentiment shared by many: “Amidst widespread suffering, they continue to distribute funds. It’s heartless.”
Chris Chukwuma’s take was similarly critical: “We are burdened with politicians, not true leaders. Recognizing these individuals as the leeches they are is crucial for our nation’s progress.”
Ernest Innocent chimed in: “It’s infuriating that they do little in the legislative hall and yet consistently distribute taxpayer funds at their convenience.”
Obi Ugochukwu’s tweet drew a contrast: “The era of ‘Ghana Must Go bags’ may have ended, but the APC era brings funds to their accounts and emails. No wonder they no longer bicker or disrupt proceedings. It’s all about rubber-stamping.”
Ajani Biola pointed out the swift change of tune: “Nigerian politicians and corruption are inseparable. He adjusted his stance as soon as he realized he was on national TV.”
IAmGtreal criticized the Senate’s conduct: “Disorderly and chaotic proceedings in the Senate chamber.”
Adex Olami conveyed a bleak perspective: “We’re bound to suffer until we wise up. The electorate is greater in number, yet elected officials enjoy better privileges. Nigeria’s reality is surreal.”
Peace’s tweet captured the frustration: “Look at these shameless senators. Meanwhile, people struggle to afford electricity even for a few hours. Shameful.”
Brainy Sammuel summed up the sentiment: “Our current situation is absurd, and we find ourselves in an unfortunate predicament.”
