The Kano State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for suspected individuals who were jeering at the Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, during a public event on Sunday.
The State’s Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, revealed this while addressing reporters on Monday, stating that the disrespectful chants aimed at the emir had the potential to incite unrest within the state.
He referred to the culprits as “saboteurs, enemies of the state, and criminals.”
According to reports, the incident occurred during the re-commissioning of the Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital, attended by the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the emir.
Allegedly, certain individuals, now identified as miscreants by the police, chanted phrases like “New government, new Emir,” “We want Sanusi Back,” and “Emir Bayero is not our Emir.”
These chants alluded to demands from specific quarters to dissolve the newly established emirates and reinstate the deposed Emir Muhammadu Sanusi in place of Emir Bayero.
However, the police chief indicated that the actions of these miscreants nearly disrupted the event.
Through technological means, detectives from the command identified six of the miscreants.
“The event was proceeding smoothly with the presence of the governor when, unfortunately, at the event’s conclusion, some miscreants were heard uttering words to destabilize the event.
These uninvited individuals intruded upon the event, potentially sponsored by those with vested interests in causing disruption.
They formed an unauthorized assembly, constituting a criminal offense,” he stated.
CP Gumel emphasized that the sacred nature of the traditional institution should be respected and cautioned against politicizing it.
He asserted that anyone attempting to disrupt the state’s peace by intertwining politics with the traditional institution would be treated as an adversary of the state, saboteur, and criminal.
The police are actively pursuing the identified individuals for arrest and prosecution, including any implicated sponsors.
CP Gumel concluded, “We are vigilant, and wherever they may be, we will apprehend them.”
