NBA commends Kwara governor’s gender-equal appointments, state counsel express concerns
Governor Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq of Kwara State received recognition from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for his progressive approach to gender equality in political appointments.
He made headlines as the only governor in Nigeria to surpass the 35% women participation guideline by appointing 50% women as commissioners.
During a plenary session at the recently concluded NBA conference in Abuja, renowned lawyer Falana, SAN, commended the governor’s commitment to women’s involvement in politics.
However, a state counsel, speaking anonymously at the conference, disclosed that the gender balance in commissioner appointments was indeed a point of pride for Kwara State.
Yet, the counsel expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of financial support for their attendance at this year’s NBA conference.
The counsel stated that this marked the first time in over a decade that their registration, transportation, and other allowances were not provided.
The counsel appealed to the governor to rectify this situation, especially since their local NBA chapter had extended credit to enable their participation.
Furthermore, the State Counsel called on the governor to settle outstanding allowances, including Wardrobe and furniture allowances.
Additionally, there was an appeal for the reinstatement of workshops, seminars, and international conferences for the Counsel, aimed at enhancing their professional development and competitiveness on a national level.
