Nationwide hardship: Sokoto Gov subsidises rice, others by 55%
In an effort to mitigate nationwide hardship, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu has approved a 55 per cent discount on rice and other essential items procured for the people of the state at the cost of N14 billion.
Governor Aliyu, while announcing this during the inauguration of the state and local government monitoring teams for the sales of food items at subsidised rate on Monday, said the gesture was aimed at cushioning the effect of the current hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy in the country.
He explained that the food items were meant for every family across the 244 wards in the state.
“Avoid any political, ethnic or religious consideration while discharging your assignment. Make sure every family has free access to these items because it is meant for every resident of this state,” he warned.
The governor, however, assured that the initiative would be sustained until the economic situation in the country improved while calling on other wealthy individuals and corporate bodies to complement the government’s efforts towards improving the people’s living standard.
He also admonished religious leaders to preach to their subjects to be generous to one another.
The governor noted that members of the committees drawn from academia, EFCC, ICPC, other security agencies and politicians were selected based on their track records.
Speaking on behalf of the committees, the state coordinator and former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Chiso Dattijo, assured the governor they would work assiduously to achieve the set goal.
He appealed for support from the state’s people for the committees to succeed in their assignments.
