While many celebrate the Nigerian national team’s resounding victory on Sunday, beating São Tomé’s football team 16-0 both at home and away, some Super Eagles fans have voiced diverse opinions regarding the outcome.
The Super Eagles triumphed with a 10-0 win in São Tomé and a 6-0 victory in Nigeria during their African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Some Nigerian fans, however, viewed the match with a degree of skepticism, suggesting that São Tomé’s team lacked professional footballers. They argued that Nigeria’s national team was showcasing its prowess against an opponent with no seasoned players.
The Super Eagles concluded their AFCON qualifier matches with a decisive 6-0 win against São Tomé and Príncipe in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state. Notably, the São Tomeans proved to be no match for the Super Eagles, with Victor Osimhen scoring a hat-trick and contributions from Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Samuel Chukwueze.
In the course of the AFCON qualifiers, the Super Eagles have netted a total of 22 goals, with 16 of those goals coming against São Tomé.
Osimhen’s hat-trick on Sunday brought his tally to 20 goals for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, surpassing Obafemi Martins’ record of 18 goals. He is now 17 goals away from overtaking Rashidi Yekini as the all-time highest goal scorer for the Super Eagles, who boasts 37 goals.
Sarki, a social media activist, commented, “The Nigerian National team flexing their muscles against a team with zero professional footballers, but when it’s time to face good teams they’ll start playing rubbish.”
Olawale Mathew cautioned, “Na there we dey see you,” suggesting that the Super Eagles have a tendency to disappoint when facing stronger teams.
Eze Obinna congratulated the Super Eagles, saying, “Kudos to Super Eagle, u make us proud, please prepare more when we face bigger teams.”
Abdullateef Oniyo expressed his view, stating, “This is cheat, Super Eagle is bigger than the team, so we don’t expect less.”
