Media clampdown: Kwara police CP admits ASKOMP allegations as members call for justice

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Paul Odama has admitted to the allegations levelled against him by Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP).

The spokesperson of the police in Kwara State, SP Okasanmi Ajayi made this revelation in a statement issued on Friday on behalf of the police command.

The spokesperson narrated that the commissioner of police was trying to give room for peace, hence his direction that Abdulrasheed Akogun and Dare Akogun should write apology letter.

Ajayi also said that the action taken by the CP was to settle issues surrounding the defamation allegation earlier raised by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to Kwara Governor.

He further explained that the matter is being investigated by officers attached to the State CID of the command.

“The suspects one Abdbulrasheed Akogun and Dare Akogun were brought before the Commissioner of Police, CP Paul Odama psc(+) where the duo confessed to the authorship of the offensive and criminal accusations against the persons of the Governor and the petitioner in the presence of their lawyers and some members of the press.”

“The CP made it known to the suspects after interviewing them on the offensive write up which they published on some whatsapp groups and which they confessed to. The CP told the suspects of the seriousness and consequences of their actions, he advised the duo to make peace with the complainant and seek for ways of settling the matter by apologizing to the petitioner since they are all of the same pen profession, and that he would have no option than to charge the two of them to court.” Okasanmi added.

“To the chagrin of the CP, the suspects accepted the option of being charged to court, as according to them they have enough evidences against the petitioner to proof their case in court”

The Informant247 had earlier reported that the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) has condemned the position of the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Paul Odama over the alleged defamation case which involves Dare Akogun and Abdulrasheed Akogun.

ASKOMP made this revelation via a statement signed by both its Chairman and Secretary, Shola Salihu Taofeek and Oyewale Oyelola respectively.

The associate of media practitioners in the state has described the manner the Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Mr Paul Odama forced the duo to pen apology letter to petition masterminded by Rafiu Ajakaye, the Chief Press Secretary to Kwara State.

The association has also revealed that such case of defamation has procedure for prosecution which has to be religiously followed without political interference from the Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led Kwara State Government.
