May Day: Edo Gov increases minimum wage to ₦75,000 to enhance workers’ living standards
In a significant move to improve the welfare of workers, Governor Monday Okpebholo has raised the minimum wage in Edo State from ₦70,000 to ₦75,000. The announcement was made during the Workers’ Day celebration on Thursday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
During the event, Governor Okpebholo expressed his pride in the new wage, stating, “Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 per month for Edo workers. This is our way of saying thank you to the workforce, and we believe this increase will make a real difference in their lives.”
The governor emphasized his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers since he took office, highlighting initiatives such as the conversion of over 1,000 casual workers, including cleaners, into the core civil service for greater job security. He also announced the hiring of 500 new teachers to alleviate educational pressures and the review of positions for over 3,000 Edo State teachers for potential full employment.
In addition, he pointed out that the state government approved the recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical staff for its hospitals, as well as the regularization of 126 contract staff at the Edo State Specialist Hospital.
“These actions strengthen our health system and improve job stability for health professionals,” he noted.
The governor extended his warmest wishes to all workers, acknowledging their hard work, resilience, and contributions to the state’s development.
A statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, reiterated the governor’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by workers across various sectors and their vital role in driving the economy.
This year’s May Day celebration served as an opportunity to recognize the achievements of the workforce in Edo State, with the governor assuring them of ongoing efforts to address their concerns and enhance their well-being.
