Man receives 35 lashes and prison term for theft of cellphone, building materials
In a recent verdict, a Shari’a Court situated in Kaduna State has ruled that Inuwa Ahmad, a 22-year-old individual, is to receive 35 lashes as punishment for his involvement in stealing a cellphone and building materials valued at N130,000.
The presiding judge, Malam Anass Khalifa, further ordered a six-month imprisonment for Ahmad following his admission of guilt in relation to the theft.
Judge Khalifa explained the rationale behind the sentence, noting, “The court acknowledged your prompt admission of guilt, which saved time. In consideration of this, the court has decided to reduce the originally intended 50 lashes to 35 lashes, with the hope that this punishment will serve as a deterrent against future theft.”
Ahmad had presented his plea for leniency by revealing that he resorted to theft due to financial constraints.
He clarified that the remuneration provided by his brother for his labor was insufficient to meet his daily requirements.
The Prosecution Counsel, Inspector Sambo Maigari, provided insight into the case, revealing that the complainant, Malam Abdullahi Shuaibu, lodged a report at the Rigasa police station on Tuesday.
The police also highlighted that Ahmad had a history of engaging in similar offenses.
