Man in court for allegedly hitting police officer with car in Lagos
A man, Olumide Oseni, was on Monday arraigned before the court for allegedly hitting a police officer on duty with his vehicle.
The 34-year-old man was on Monday dragged before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly hitting a police officer on duty with his vehicle.
Oseni, whose address of residence was not given, is facing trial on a three-count charge of attempt to commit murder, assault and breach of peace.
ASP Benedict Aigbokhan, the prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant carried out the offences on November 6, around 12.20 p.m., at Ijegun – Isheri Oshun Road, Lagos.
The prosecutor also added that the defendant behaved himself in a manner which was likely to cause breach of peace by involving in recklesss driving (as he drove against one-way) with his Toyota Camry, having JJJ 648 HH as registration number.
Aigbokhan explained that the defendant did not stop when the police officers on duty signaled him to do so.
The prosecutor narrated that the defendant disobeyed the order and hit a police officer on duty, one Insp Bassey Ofem.
“The defendant refused to obey traffic rules, rather hit Insp Ofem with his vehicle.
“The police officer tried to dodge the vehicle but sustained injury on his right leg,” Aigbokhan said.
The prosecutor revealed that the intention of the defendant was to murder the police officer, despite the fact he saw him on police uniform with his riffle.
He added that the offences were in contravention of the Sections 56 (a), 168(d) and 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
When the matter was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty to all the three counts.
Miss K. A. Ariyo, the Magistrate, admitted him to N500,000 bail plus two sureties in like sum.
She directed that the sureties must have reliable source of income and must present evidence of tax payments to the State Government.
The Magistrate has adjourned the matter until November 28 for mention.
