Man falls into a soakaway, dies in Benin while registering for free medical care
An unidentified man was reported to have fallen into a soakaway and died at Oredo Primary Health Centre in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, yesterday, during registration for free medical care.
The state government had organized the free medical care for residents of the state, in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the United States of America.
The victim was said to have left the long queue during an ongoing free registration exercise, to ease himself somewhere around the premises, before he met his death.
He mistakenly stepped on a soakaway, fell into it, and got drowned.
No inscription of caution was placed around the weak soakaway, which was covered with grasses.
The health workers and waiting to be registered queuers were temporarily thrown into a panic, as they cried out sympathetically.
It was gathered that the victim was removed dead from the soakaway with the aid of an excavator supplied to the affected area by the urgent response team, that showed up four hours later.
It was gathered that the Oredo Primary Health Centre immediately suspended the registration for free medical care the unfortunate scenario happened.
Attempts to reach Prof. Akoria Obehi, the state Commissioner for Health, proved abortive, just as the spokesman of the Nigeria Police, Edo State Command, Mr. Kotongs Bello, also did not respond to his calls.
