Local Government autonomy will reduce burden on federal legislators – Kwara reps
Rt. Hon. Tunji Olawuyi, the member representing Ekiti, Isin, Irepodun, and Oke-Ero Federal Constituency, has hailed the supreme court judgment granting a full autonomy to the 774 local governments in the country, saying the decision of the apex court would alleviate the burden on National Assembly members and enable them to focus on larger-scale development and legislation.
It would be recalled that the Supreme Court had last week Thursday, delivered a significant judgment on granting financial autonomy to the 774 local government areas in the country after the case was brought by the federal government against the 36 state governors.
The court ruled that it is illegal and unconstitutional for governors to continue to receive and seize funds allocated to LGAs in their states.
However, in a statement signed by Olayinka Owolewa, the media aide to Rep. Tunji Olawuyi, the federal lawmaker, while throwing his weight behind the granting of local government autonomy, described it as a significant step towards decentralising power and deepening democratic governance in Nigeria.
The statement reads, “By empowering local governments, we are unlocking the full potential of our great nation and stimulating grassroots growth.
“I commend this bold step towards strengthening our federal system and unlocking the full potential of our great nation.
“This bold step will lead to more inclusive and effective democratic governance, and I commend all stakeholders for their efforts in making this a reality,” the statement added.
