The 2023 flood has been described as the worst to hit the country in the last decade

A statement from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs recently noted that the flood has so far forced 1.4 million people out of their homes, destroyed over 70,000 hectares of farmlands and killed more than 500 people.

According to statement from the ministry’s Deputy Director Information, Rhoda Ishaku Iliya, he added that “45,249 houses were totally damaged.”

The National Emergency Management Agency spokesman, Manzo Ezekiel has blamed the high level of damage on “violations of regional rules” and construction near waterways.

Noting that the rainy season usually begins around June, most deaths and displacements according to the government officials started “around August and September”

The rainy season typically ends in November in northern states and in December in the south.

Last month, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs announced the Federal Government had started to distribute 12,000 Metric Tonnes of food and non-food items to disaster-stricken in Anambra state (south) or Jigawa state (north).

Floods have affected 31 of Nigeria’s 36 states including the capital.

In addition to a harsh rainy season , floods were also caused by the release of water from several damns (the process was meant to prevent excessive flooding).

In 2012, 363 people died and more than 2.1 million were displaced from flooding
