The Lagos Government has disclosed plans to increase the number of comprehensive schools across the state from the initial 12 schools to 50 schools by September 2022 to renew the efforts of the government in making Lagos State school students to be self-reliant and skilled.
While explaining this at the sensitisation of stakeholders on Lagos State Comprehensive School Programme which took place at Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo stated that the comprehensive school programme which started in February is targeted at reducing the rate of dropout in schools as some students are disinterested in the academic curriculum but prefer to learn various skills.
She laid emphasis on the equal opportunities that the that the programme would give students to explore their interest and train them to mastery level. Mrs. Adefisayo informed stakeholders comprising school principals, school support and education quality assurance officers across the state on the significance of inserting comprehensive school programme in the school curriculum.
“We discovered and observed that out of every 10 students admitted to JS1 only three make it to SS3, while only one student will eventually excel at the transition exam,” adding that it had resulted to an increase in student dropouts in Lagos State.” According to the commissioner, the state government has established partnership with private and International institutions for training, internship opportunities and employment prospects for the students.
“Already plans are ongoing for some of the teachers to travel to Finland to understudy a similar system that operates in that country”, she added.
The Commissioner appreciated the school principals for the great and outstanding results in the last WASSCE reaffirming that the performance of students with a minimum of five credits including Mathematics and English has improved from 38.79% in 2020 to 79.64% in 2021. Adefisayo motivated the school principals to continue to put more effort to achieve more positive results.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr Abayomi Abolaji, in a welcome address, commended the commitment of stakeholders to the success of the programme. He stated that the state government has done well to equip the schools with the various needed infrastructure to grow the newly set up programme.
