The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Command, said the state recorded the loss of 75 lives in road traffic crashes in the state during the period spanning January to August.
Babatunde Farinloye, the FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, revealed this statistic to journalists in Lagos.
Within this eight-month timeframe, a total of 1,611 individuals were involved in road traffic accidents, comprising 102 minor accidents and 158 serious incidents.
To ensure safety on the roads, the command deployed 324 personnel at various checkpoints.
Furthermore, the FRSC documented 53,564 traffic offenses, with 44,269 individuals committing these infractions during the same period.
Farinloye stressed the importance of cultivating a safety-conscious culture among both motorists and pedestrians to reduce fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes.
As the “Ember Months” approach, traditionally associated with increased vehicular movements and socio-cultural events, the FRSC is committed to intensifying measures to bring down the accident rate.
These measures include public sensitization campaigns, vehicle safety checks, drivers’ training, vehicle inspections, regulation of fleet operations, and regular highway surveillance.
The FRSC’s 2023 Campaign for Safety during the rainy season and ember months carries the theme “Speed Thrills, It Kills, Drive Responsibly And Avoid Overloading.”
Responsible drivers are encouraged to adhere to speed limits, maintain their vehicles regularly, refrain from phone use while driving, avoid speeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Farinloye affirmed that the command would enhance traffic monitoring and management through the addition of logistical support.
He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring accident-free “ember months” and beyond.
