KWASUED here to stay, won’t take jobs from College of Education workers — Kwara govt

The Kwara State Government has said the establishment of the Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED) will not lead to job losses at the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, assuring that both institutions will continue to operate.

The Supervising Commissioner for Tertiary Education and Commissioner for Education and Human Capital, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, gave the assurance on Monday during the inauguration of a Joint Management Committee for the coexistence of the two institutions.

Olohungbebe said the creation of KWASUED was intended to expand employment opportunities in the state, rather than take jobs from workers at the College of Education.

“KWASUED has come to stay, while the College of Education will equally continue to operate,” he said, stressing the government’s commitment to ensuring the smooth running of both institutions.

The commissioner added that the government was working towards developing KWASUED’s permanent site, after which the university would relocate from the College of Education premises.

He urged the newly inaugurated committee to ensure that the coexistence arrangement produced tangible results and did not become a mere administrative exercise.

The seven-member committee, comprising representatives of KWASUED, the College of Education and the Ministry of Tertiary Education, is expected to oversee the management and utilisation of shared facilities and resources.

Olohungbebe said members of the committee were well positioned to develop workable solutions to challenges that might arise from the coexistence of the two institutions.

He also urged them to produce practical and implementable recommendations to guide the ministry in managing the relationship between the institutions.

Earlier, the Director of Continuing Education, Dr Sunday Akanbi, said the committee’s inauguration was an important step towards establishing a structured relationship between the two institutions.

He stressed the need for cooperation, mutual understanding and effective communication, particularly in the use of facilities and day-to-day operations.

Speaking on behalf of the committee, Prof Ganiyu Bello expressed the members’ readiness to ensure that the coexistence arrangement succeeds.

The committee was inaugurated following recommendations of an earlier government committee set up to develop a blueprint for the peaceful and effective coexistence of KWASUED and the College of Education during the transitional period before the development of KWASUED’s permanent site.
