Kwara warns farmers of scams on social media as planting season approaches

As the planting season approaches, the Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has alerted farmers and agribusiness owners about a rise in unsolicited messages on social media, particularly WhatsApp These messages request personal information or prompt individuals to register for programs that falsely claim to be linked to government initiatives, loans, or agricultural input support.

The Ministry has clarified that it is not in partnership with any unverified groups or platforms soliciting such information.

Understanding the critical nature of this period in the agricultural calendar, the Ministry recognizes that many farmers are actively seeking genuine support and training opportunities. However, this time also attracts fraudulent individuals and groups aiming to exploit the trust of the farming community.

In light of this situation, the Ministry urges all farmers, agribusiness owners, and cooperative groups in the state to exercise caution. They should verify all information before engaging with any platform and refrain from sharing personal or business data with unrecognized entities.

Dr. Afees Abolore Alabi, the Honorable Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, reaffirmed that this warning reflects the Kwara State Government’s commitment, under the leadership of Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to protect the interests of farmers and ensure transparency in all agricultural support systems. This effort aims to build public trust and safeguard legitimate initiatives from exploitation.

Farmers and stakeholders are encouraged to be vigilant and avoid falling victim to misinformation.

Anyone who encounters suspicious messages or individuals making unverifiable claims in the name of the Ministry is urged to report these incidents through official communication channels.
