Kwara vaccinates 132,792 animals to mitigate zoonotic diseases

In a decisive effort to mitigate zoonotic diseases in the state, the Kwara State Government has successfully vaccinated 132,792 animals, including cattle, sheep, and goats, during a recent state-wide mass vaccination campaign.

Hon Oloruntoyosi Thomas, the State Commissioner for Livestock Development, shared this significant achievement while presenting Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s scorecard at a quarterly inter-ministerial press briefing held at the Ministry of Finance. “We have vaccinated 110,241 cattle, along with 16,009 sheep and 6,542 goats,” she reported, underscoring the vital role these vaccinations play in ensuring both animal welfare and public health.

Additionally, the Commissioner announced the establishment of a Live Bird Market by the newly formed Ministry, aimed at providing growth opportunities for poultry farmers and fowl sellers.

“This market will act as a surveillance point to prevent the transmission of zoonotic diseases,” Hon Thomas explained.

The Commissioner also mentioned the completion of the Cadre Harmonise analysis by the National Task Force, which was presented to the nation, Ecowas, and the United Nations.

“Our Ministry is fully committed to building a vibrant, modern, and inclusive livestock sector,” she affirmed, highlighting the government’s dedication to unlocking the hidden potentials of the livestock industry.

Furthermore, Hon Thomas revealed plans to initiate rabies vaccinations throughout the state.

“The present administration will do everything possible to control and eliminate rabies incidents resulting from dog and cat bites,” she stated, emphasizing the commitment to public health and safety.
