Kwara urges community vigilance against tuberculosis

Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina Ahmed El-Imam, has commended the Spouses of Local Government Heads for their dedicated efforts in addressing tuberculosis in their communities.

Dr. El-Imam made the remarks during the investiture of the Oyun Local Government Tuberculosis Champion at the Onijagbo of Ijagbo’s Palace on Monday.

The commissioner underscoring the importance of the investiture, noted that health champions are critical in reaching out to the community and effectively communicating the necessary health information, while calling on the residents of Ijagbo and other communities within the Oyun Local Government Area to be vigilant in identifying and reporting symptoms of tuberculosis to the nearest government health facility.

The commissioner also emphasized that this approach aims to curb the spread of the disease while ensuring timely detection and treatment. She urged the community to take advantage of government healthcare initiatives, including medical outreach programs and immunizations, to protect themselves from TB and other infectious diseases.

Dr. El-Imam, however, encouraged all residents to support the campaign by promoting awareness and ensuring that individuals exhibiting symptoms such as persistent cough, weight loss, night sweats, and fever seek immediate medical attention at accredited government facilities.

Reaffirming the commitment of Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to deliver accessible quality healthcare, Dr. El-Imam appreciated the role of Local Government Councils and traditional leaders as health advocates, encouraging them to remain proactive in the fight against tuberculosis.

The Chairman of Oyun Local Government, Hon. Kamal Olanrewaju Akanbi, expressed gratitude for the state government’s continuous efforts to combat tuberculosis, particularly at the grassroots level. He assured the community of his administration’s commitment to supporting tuberculosis elimination initiatives and enhancing public health in the region.
