Kwara unveils 18-Point plan for cleaner environment

In an effort to foster better communication and engagement with the citizens, the Kwara State Government, through the Ministry of Environment has launched an 18-point strategy aimed at ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment.

Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, the commissioner for Environment, made this known during the First Quarterly Inter-Ministerial Press briefing held in Ilorin.

According to her, the state government is embracing new ways to connect with the residents of thr state while welcoming their feedback on environmental issues.

The Commissioner listed the strategy to include utilizing media channels, community discussions, and electronic jingles to raise awareness about environmental practices.

The Commissioner credited the support from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as instrumental in the Ministry’s efforts to monitor compliance with environmental standards.

“Thanks to the Governor’s unwavering support, we are able to inspect shops and eateries, ensuring they adhere to hygiene regulations,” she remarked. “Any establishment found violating these laws is usually sealed.”

Hajia Buge also highlighted the monthly environmental sanitation exercises, which are crucial in maintaining cleanliness across the state.

“We adjusted our exercises to accommodate important events, allowing for vehicular movement during specific periods,” she noted, emphasizing the Ministry’s adaptability to current circumstances.

Further, she shared the success of the official handover of Kampe Forestry to the Federal Government, transitioning it into a Game Reserve. This move is part of a broader initiative to upgrade various Game Reserves in the country to National Parks.

In response to impending rainy seasons, the Ministry has also initiated actions to desilt drainage channels to prevent flooding.

“Upon receiving alerts from NIMET and NEMA, we immediately began work to ensure our drainage systems are clear,” she stated.

The Ministry is simultaneously enhancing its revenue generation through various initiatives, including sales of waste bins and collections from fines.

“Our collaboration with the Kwara Environmental Protection Agency is proving effective in generating funds for our operations,” Hajia Buge added.

Mrs. Bola Olukoju, the Commissioner for Communications and Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Press briefing, commended the Ministry for their relentless efforts in pursuing a cleaner Kwara, underscoring the importance of community involvement in maintaining a sustainable environment.
