Kwara Speaker declares open 4-day seminar for councillors to enhance capacity

The Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, RT Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu, on Friday, declared open a four-day training seminar for all the Local Government Councillors in the State.

The event tagged “Strengthening Local Governance: Enhancing the Capacity of Local Government Legislative Council for Inclusive Development”, which was organised by Kwara State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development in collaboration with FERHAT CONSULT LTD, is being held at the Silver Gate Hotel in Ilorin.

The Speaker, who was represented by the House leader, Hon. Oba Magaji, expressed optimism that the seminar would further deepen the relationship between the executive and the legislative arms of the Local Government, attributing that a similar seminar had earlier been organised at the State level for the House of Assembly Members, which has helped to improve their legislative duties, further enhancing the relationship between the Executive and Legislative arms of government.

He, however, commended the Stakeholders for the workshop to help the councillors know their roles and oversight functions in the administration of the third tier of government.

Earlier in his address, the  Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Community Development, Hon. Abubakar Abdullahi Bata, while acknowledging that a similar seminar had been organised for the executive arm, advocates the need for all hands to be on deck for harnessing resources and sustaining the confidence of citizens.

The commissioner noted that in the last few years, the local government administration in the state had witnessed tremendous development in administration and service delivery. They are no longer known for paying salaries alone but rather solvent. They can initiate and implement capital projects that cut across all strata for the benefit of their Council Areas.
He enjoined participants to give the workshop all the necessary attention for optimal benefits.

In his goodwill message, the Executive Chairman of Kaima Local Government Council, who is also the State ALGON Chairman, Hon. Abubakar Abdullahi Danladi, thanked the organisers and urged all the participants to take full advantage of the opportunity to learn from one another and to strengthen their commitment to serve their various constituents with integrity.

Also speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Local Government Service Commission and Kwara State Local Government Pension Board, Hon. Umar Danladi Shero, commended the state government for giving them free hands to administer their councils, adding that he is very optimistic that the lost confidence amongst the Staff of Local Government Councils had been restored by ensuring prompt payment of salary, regular promotions with the necessary financial incentives to motivate them to work harder.
