Kwara reaffirms commitment to empowering persons living with disabilities

The Kwara State Government has reiterated its commitment to uplifting and empowering Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWD) to positively impact their lives and ensure their well-being.

During a recent courtesy visit from the Executives of the PLWD, the Commissioner for Social Development, Hon. Mariam Nnafatima Imam, PhD, emphasized the state’s annual commemoration of PLWD, where physically challenged citizens receive mobility aids. She highlighted plans to digitalize the operations of the PLWD, facilitating support from private and foreign donors to enhance the efforts of the State Government in providing relief to PLWD members.

Hon. Mariam noted that Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has continuously integrated PLWD into his administration, showcasing his confidence in their ability to contribute meaningfully to the state’s growth. She also revealed ongoing plans to renovate and re-equip the Amoyo Rehabilitation Centre, which was damaged by fire, in order to improve the living conditions of residents at the facility.

The Commissioner reassured that the current administration is dedicated to executing policies and programs aimed at addressing the challenges faced by PLWD, with additional empowerment initiatives in the pipeline.

Hon. Soliu Habeeb Baba Olaoye, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Needs, commended the Commissioner for her proactive and impactful approach, while Permanent Secretary Mr. Peter Kayode Ayanwale expressed confidence in her leadership to bring significant achievements to the Ministry.

Mrs. Florence Balogun, Director of Personnel, Finance, and Supply, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the Commissioner’s commitment to the welfare of PLWD.

Mallam Kehinde Abdulsalam, representing PLWD members, thanked Governor AbdulRazaq for his support through various empowerment programs. He also appealed for attention to specific challenges faced by PLWD, particularly concerning blind pupils at the School of Special Needs, who lack the necessary facilities to advance to secondary education.

He urged the State Government to take prompt action to address these challenges, expressing confidence in Governor AbdulRazaq’s exemplary leadership.
