Kwara Poly confirms killing of former student in suspected cult clash

The management of the Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has confirmed the killing of a former student, Oyelade Habeeb Olawale, following a violent clash allegedly involving rival cult groups near the institution on Tuesday.

Olawale, a former Civil Engineering student with matriculation number ND/20/CEC/FT/206, was reportedly attacked during a confrontation said to involve ex-students linked to various cult groups who had returned to the campus area.

The violent encounter sparked panic within the Polytechnic community, forcing the institution’s security unit to intervene and restore calm.

Several suspects believed to have taken part in the attack were reportedly apprehended by the school’s security team and handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation.

Confirming the incident, the Polytechnic’s Public Relations Officer, Halimat Garba, described the killing as a regrettable development that undermines the institution’s commitment to peace and academic stability.

“We deeply regret the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased,” she said.

Halimat explained that the security unit responded swiftly through internal intelligence gathering, which led to the arrest of the suspects now in police custody.

She added that management is working closely with security agencies to ensure justice is served and to prevent further breakdown of order.

According to her, normalcy has returned to the campus, and academic activities have continued without disruption.

“The Polytechnic remains vigilant against any form of violence or cult-related activities. We urge students and members of the community to report suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities,” she added.
