Kwara police warn youth against jungle justice

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Lawal Bagega psc has warned the youth to eschew carrying out jungle justice on any suspect or property.

Bagega said that anyone arrested taking laws into his hands will be made to feel the full weight of the law.

As part of the efforts to stem the rising security concerns in the Kwara south axis of the state and to also have first-hand information on the reasons for security anxiety in the communities, especially in Irepodun, Okeero and Ekiti local government areas on the alleged suspected herdsmen/kidnapping activities, the commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command met the traditional rulers and security stakeholders’ in Omuaran.

According to the statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Okasanmi Ajayi on Saturday, the necessity of the visit was an attempt to build the confidence of members of the communities on the ability and capability of the police to protect their lives and property.

Among those in attendance were traditional rulers in the 3 local government areas, the chairmen of the 3 local government areas, vigilante and professional hunters, okada riders and members of other sister security agencies and policemen and women in the axis.

During the meeting, the CP spoke extensively on the need for peaceful coexistence among all the people, the gain in being one’s brother’s keeper and the advantage of consultation whenever there are contentious issues. He reiterated the fact that Nigeria’s constitution permits citizens to reside wherever they deem comfortable but never allows for acts of criminality of any sort.

Meanwhile, the commissioner who met with the vigilante and professional hunters, admonished them to be diligent, proactive and do more intelligence gathering all within the ambit of the law and under the strict supervision of the DPOs of their area.

The CP enjoined the people to always make information available to the police and must not provide a shield for any criminal.
