A group within the Peoples Democratic Party, Kwara PDP Transformation, has berated the party chairman, Hon. Babatunde Mohammed over his comment on the viral video clip of the Special Assistant to the State Governor on Rural Mobilisation, Comrade Musibau Esinrogunjo.
A 45-second clip that has gone viral across social media platforms showed the governor’s aide being interrogated by some police officers over the alleged recovery of some quantities of substance suspected to be Indian hemp and a cartridge wrapped in a paper.
At a point in the video which was earlier reported by The Informant247, it could be observed that the governor’s aide, despite his appeal, was being slapped and beaten by individuals presumed to be police officers.
The police reacting to this in a statement by its spokesman, Dsp Ajayi Okasanmi, on Sunday, said it only arrested the governor’s aide for breaking traffic rules and attacking a police officer and not for being in possession of drugs or cartridges.
The police further added that “the video in question was posted by a mischievous individual to achieve a result still unknown to the Command.”
The Peoples Democratic Party, meanwhile in a statement by its chairman demanded the prosecution of the governor’s aide and demanded that the matter must not be swept under the carpet.
He said, “the attention of our party has been drawn to the viral video showing some police officers questioning and beating the Special Assistant to Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara state, Comrade Musibau Esinrogunjo, over possession of live bullets and illegal substances suspected to be marijuana.”
However, the PDP group said that the party chairman’s comment showed “the lawless attitude of the present party executives”.
The group in a statement jointly signed by its Coordinator, Comr L.N. Omoyooba, and Secretary, Abubakar Usman, said “It was funny that the party chairman who supervised irrational suspension or purported expulsion of the committed members could easily jump to the conclusion on the mere allegations.
“Genuine Kwarans who watched the videos that went viral quickly understand the myopic and senseless attitude of some police officers who wore mufti during the illegal harassment.
“It is painful that current political suicide and crises that engulfed our party at the wards and local government is not of concern to our party leadership.
“The recent activities of suspension, extortions, manipulations and maltreatment of the party members which resulted in mass defection in Edu, Oyun and Ilorin West Local Councils show that our party lack directions and sincerity.”
The group further urged Kwarans to disregard the party chairman’s comment.
