NUT, Nigerian Union of Teachers

Kwara NUT rejects NLC’s unauthorised N1,000 deduction from teachers’ salaries, demands refund

The Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has demanded an immediate reversal of the controversial N1,000 deduction reportedly taken from teachers’ October 2024 salaries.

The Informant247 gathered that the deduction tagged “Special Union Deduction” was carried out by the state council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) without proper consultation or authorisation from its affiliated unions, including the NUT.

According to a statement by Moni Mike Modesty Itua, the NUT Principal Assistant Secretary-General, addressed to teachers, clarified that the deduction was executed unilaterally by the state NLC leadership, adding the NUT and other affiliates of the NLC have since requested that the deducted amount be promptly refunded to all affected workers.

Itua regretted the tension arising from wage implementation issues and the unauthorised N1,000 deductions.

He assured members that the union is committed to addressing these matters transparently and urged teachers to remain calm and patient while resolutions are pursued.

Itua, while commenting on the recent implementation of the new minimum wage, noted that the union is collaborating with labour and relevant government agencies to verify the status of the minimum wage adjustments and seek swift resolutions.
