Kwara launches “Literacy by Radio” programme to boost education
In a bid to eradicate illiteracy in the state, the Kwara State Government has launched a “literacy by radio” programme aimed at promoting literacy and essential skills among residents.
The programme, set to commence on Monday, 21st April 2025, is designed to reach a wide audience, covering both rural and urban areas to bridge the literacy gap in the State.
Mallam Saka Yusuf, Executive Director of the Agency for Mass Education, announced the initiative during a press briefing, stating that it would be aired on Radio Kwara Midland FM 99.1 every Monday and Thursday at 5:20 pm for six weeks. The programme will cover reading, numeracy, and civic education.
Yusuf emphasized, “We are committed to empowering youths and adults with the necessary skills to contribute meaningfully to societal growth and development.” The initiative aims to equip participants with the ability to read, write, and perform basic calculations.
He reiterated the government’s dedication to improving the literacy rate in the State and encouraged youths and adults to tune in and participate actively.
The Agency has also initiated advocacy visits to traditional, religious, and political leaders, alongside learners, to garner support and ensure active involvement.
During a visit to the Emir of Lafiagi, Alh. Muhammed Kudu Kawu, represented by Chief of Staff Alh. Alfa Lawal, the Emir praised the State Government’s commitment to education, calling the initiative a significant development for the grassroots.
In Offa LGA, Hon. Seun Oguniyi Adato, a member of the Kwara State House of Assembly representing Ojomu/Balogun Offa State constituency, commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his visionary investments in education.
Additionally, Hon. Jolayemi Olarewaju, Executive Chairman of Isin Local Government Area, praised the Governor’s support for literacy and vocational skills and pledged to support the programme in his area.
Learners received radio sets, literacy primers, and instructional materials to enhance engagement, and they expressed excitement about the opportunity to learn through the radio.
