Kwara intensifies fight against female genital mutilation
The Kwara State Government has firmly reiterated its commitment to the eradication of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at the grassroots level, citing persistent high rates of the practice in local communities. This announcement was made by the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Mrs. Afolashade Opeyemi Oluwakemi, during her advocacy visit to Lafiaji in the Edu Local Government Area.
During the visit, the Commissioner emphasized the administration’s zero tolerance policy towards FGM and violence against women, which has prompted her team to initiate advocacy efforts starting from Edu Local Government.
Addressing community leaders at the Emir’s palace, she highlighted the significant harm caused by FGM, noting its role in leading to infertility and the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases among affected women. “There is a law against female genital mutilation. Perpetrators will henceforth be arrested and prosecuted accordingly,” she warned.
Local Government Chairman Mallam Bello Abdullahi pledged his support for the ministry’s initiatives, promising to help spread awareness against the harmful practice throughout Lafiaji.
In a show of solidarity, the Emir of Lafiagi, Alhaji Mohammed Kudu Kawu, assured the Commissioner of his full backing for the advocacy efforts, committing to amplify the message in both churches and mosques across the community.
