Kwara Govt engages COEASU, reiterates commitment to quality education
The Kwara State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to improving the education sector, particularly at the tertiary level, as it engages with the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) to address key concerns.
According to a statement signed by the Press Secretary, Ministry for Tertiary Education, Omotayo Ayanda, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, gave this assurance while receiving a delegation from COEASU, led by its chairman, Comrade Yahaya Mohammed Ndagi, in her office.
She highlighted the state government’s commitment to quality education, citing the establishment of the Kwara State University of Education, Ilorin, as a clear demonstration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s vision for higher learning.
According to her, the university will create more opportunities for students and enhance the academic environment for staff.
Addressing COEASU’s concerns, Hajia Modibbo Kawu assured the union that the government is taking necessary steps to improve the welfare of academic staff and strengthen the college system.
She stated that Governor AbdulRazaq values the contributions of educators and remains committed to supporting their professional growth and the overall development of the education sector.
She further reassured COEASU that the governor, known for his proactive leadership, would attend to their requests accordingly.
In his remarks, COEASU chairman, Comrade Yahaya Ndagi, appreciated the state government for ensuring the prompt payment of salaries and allowances, which he said had contributed to the smooth running of academic activities.
However, he raised concerns about the transition process for the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, following the establishment of the Kwara State University of Education.
He stressed the need for a clear framework to guide the transition and urged the government to address leadership vacancies and other pressing issues.
Meanwhile, the National Universities Commission (NUC) officially recognised the Kwara State University of Education on 30th July 2024, making it the 64th state-owned university and the 274th in Nigeria.
In November 2024, Governor AbdulRazaq inaugurated the university’s Governing Council, appointing Professor Shuaib Oba AbdulRaheem as chairman and pro-chancellor to oversee the institution’s takeoff.
